WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?

Breast augmentation aims to enhance the volume, fullness, and projection of the breasts using implants. Breast augmentation is an incredibly customizable procedure with a variety of options available for implant types, implant placement, incision patterns, and more.

Breast Implants

There are many different types of breast implants available, but the main differences concern the filling – implants are either saline-filled or silicone-filled. Each has its benefits – for example, you may want saline-filled implants to accommodate a smaller incision since they can be filled after placement. On the other hand, you may want the more natural or firm feel of silicone implants. There are also different implant sizes, textures, and shapes available. Your plastic surgeon will help you determine the right implant choice for your needs.

Implant Placement

Implants can be placed either on top of the chest muscle or underneath it. There are benefits to each option – placing the implants underneath the muscle can lengthen recovery but provide a more natural feel. Placing them on top of the muscle can provide better projection but may cause the implant to be more visible. This will be part of your discussion with your plastic surgeon.

Incision Pattern

The most common incision pattern for breast augmentation is placed underneath the crease of the breast. Other options include around the nipple and inside the armpit. Your ideal incision can depend on factors like your chosen implant and preferences.

BREAST AUGMENTATION CANDIDATES

To be considered a good candidate for breast augmentation, you should be in overall good health and able to undergo surgery. Most women who opt for breast augmentation are unhappy with the size, shape, or proportion of their breasts and want to add implants to better fill out their figure. If you’re planning to become pregnant or breastfeed, your plastic surgeon can discuss your options for taking extra steps accordingly.

THE BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE

Breast augmentation begins by creating your preferred incisions. From there, your plastic surgeon will create a small pocket in the breast and then place the implant. Once in place, the incisions will be closed and you’ll be made ready for your recovery.

BREAST AUGMENTATION RECOVERY

Breast augmentation typically requires 1-2 weeks of downtime. You’ll be instructed to limit your activity level and focus on resting throughout this phase, checking in with our team regularly to monitor your progress. One essential step is wearing a specialized surgical bra which helps support your new breasts and relieves pressure from your incisions. Our team will give you detailed instructions on caring for your incisions, taking medications, and more during your pre-operative appointment. It may take 3-6 months for your implants to fully settle into their final appearance, and swelling will continue to fade throughout this time. By one year after surgery, your incisions should be completely faded and you can enjoy your results for years to come.
